Downtown Biddeford has an annual art competition and street festival known as Chalk on the Walk. This is my first time participating, and it was difficult to use chalk.

Welcome to 'The Urban Draw,' my personal way to showcase and share the sketches of (mostly) urban scenes I have been working on or completed recently. Some of these pieces are intended to be perfect, while others are just off the top of my head random sloppy sketches. I like both equally. It is my hope that everyone who visits this site will find at least one piece they enjoy, which resonates with them or brings back a pleasant urban experience. A sense of place matters to most people, and I have attempted to capture some of that in my art. Here are a few that just happen to be on my hard drive already. More to come once my scanner is back up and running. Happy viewing.

This first sketch was done in approximately 10 minutes on a small notepad while at work. It is copied from a black and white picture of Portland's Fore Street.

The following sketch is one I completed on commission for a friend with ties to the city of Cincinnati, OH. This is a cropped version of it. It took over one year to complete, and is on acid free art paper that stretches something like 2.5 feet in width.

As with most of my art, the following is a sketch that sort of evolved into more of a project than I anticipated. I began it one night while studying for law school, on the back of a piece of resume' paper (cotton). It wasn't intended to be much, but I began to like the looks of it, and after the amount of work I put into the trees, I couldn't rationalize not finishing it. Currently, it is 99% completed, although the version shown below is only about 85% complete.

The following image is one I drew from a picture I took several years ago, from the vantage point of just outside the cinema downtown, and it depicts what one would see if they looked westward toward monument square. It is a bit more 'cartoony' than I care for, but I had fun with it.
This picture is one I drew depicting a typical street scene in Portland's Old Port. The perspective is that of standing on mid Commercial Street looking Northward toward Fore Street. Bull Feeney's bar and restaurant is the building shown directly ahead. Unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced this one, so I don't anticipate finishing it anytime soon...
Currently, I am working on a sketch depicting Boston's skyline as seen from its Waterfront. At the moment, it is a pencil outline of the silhouette that will eventually be retraced in pen and ink. It is on acid free art paper, and measures 2 feet in diameter. Please check back for updates.
